Landing the role
Further resources
Forward deployed engineering sits at the intersection of engineering, consulting and product. The resources below are a starting point for each side; the most valuable learning still comes from doing real engagements and writing down what you learn.
Books on the customer and consulting side
| Book | Author | Why read it |
|---|---|---|
| The Mom Test | Rob Fitzpatrick | How to ask questions that reveal real problems instead of polite answers — essential for discovery |
| Flawless Consulting | Peter Block | The classic on working with clients: contracting, discovery, resistance and implementation |
| The McKinsey Way | Ethan M. Rasiel | Structured problem solving and communicating with executives |
| The Trusted Advisor | David Maister, Charles Green, Robert Galford | Building the kind of trust that makes customers bring you their hardest problems |
| Never Split the Difference | Chris Voss | Negotiation and handling tense conversations calmly |
On the role itself
- Palantir's engineering blog has written about the distinction between its platform and forward deployed engineers (search for "Dev versus Delta").
- Job descriptions for FDE roles at AI companies are a surprisingly good syllabus: collect ten, highlight the recurring skills, and compare them against your own experience.
- Customer case studies published by AI and data platform companies show what successful deployments look like and how outcomes are reported.
Technical depth
- The RAG Handbook — retrieval-augmented generation from first principles to production: chunking, embeddings, retrieval, reranking, evaluation and security.
- Your model provider's documentation on structured outputs, tool use, prompt caching and evaluation — read it end to end once; it changes often.
- Cloud provider architecture guides for private networking, identity federation and data residency.
Practice
- Write up every project in the problem → built → result format.
- Run mock ambiguous cases with a friend weekly; swap roles so you also learn what good answers sound like.
- Build one end-to-end deployment for a real user, with an evaluation set and a business case.
- Keep a story bank and refresh it after every significant piece of work.
